Summer 2024: Spanaway Lake Treatments

The District is planning treatments to Spanaway Lake for Summer 2024 to manage both noxious weeds and harmful algae blooms. These treatments are planned for June and July and are dependent on weather conditions.

  • Notice of this work will be mailed to waterfront residences and businesses within a quarter mile of the lake.

  • Signs will be posted with information at lake access points 24 to 48 hours before treatments.

  • The lake is safe for fishing, swimming, and paddling during treatment.

  • Crews applying the treatment may request motorized boats to either stay off the water or minimize wake during application.

The toxic algae caution advisory for Spanaway Lake
has been lifted

It was in place from 9/30/2022 until 5/8/2023.
Post Date: 5/08/2023 12:42 p.m.

On May 8, we lifted the toxic algae caution advisory for Spanaway Lake. The water is safe for people and pets.

Always use caution when you’re in the water. When you see algae, don’t swim, wade, waterski, or fish. Keep in mind as wind direction changes, the algae could move elsewhere in the lake. When in doubt, stay out!

Vegetation treatment for Spanaway Lake has been postponed for 2022. Surface Water Management was unable to pull together the necessary resources by the September 30 treatment deadline, and will be working with the contract applicator to develop a treatment strategy for 2023.
